Five Ancestors

The Five Ancestors style, known as Ngo Cho Kun or Wuzuquan, is a southern style of Chinese Kung Fu and a traditional mixed martial arts system developed in Fujian, China. Ngo Cho Kun, is a straight forward system which differs from other classical styles of kung fu due to its focus on practicality and the absence of ornamental techniques. Ngo Cho Kun was created by combining the most effective aspects and methods of the five most popular styles in the region at that time. Great Ancestor Boxing (thài chó͘ kûn), Fujian White Crane (pe̍h ho̍k kûn), Monkey Boxing (kâu kûn), Arhat Boxing (lô-hàn kûn), and Bodhidharma Qigong (̍ta̍t-mô͘ kûn); thus fusing explosive linear power, direct accuracy, agility and quick footwork, proficient striking patterns, and meditative breathing methods respectively. The result is a dynamic close range fighting system designed to crowd and overwhelm an opponent by utilizing the most effective techniques to end an attack as quickly as possible. Five Ancestors includes striking, stand up grappling, sweeps, takedowns, and traditional weapons training. It is the official art of the Southern Shaolin Temple in Quanzhou, and is presently used by the southern Chinese military for its simple and direct hand-to-hand combat.

This style is also well known for its unique methods of hard style qigong which consists of tension and relaxation in relation to the breath. This training method not only strengthens the muscles, tendons, bones, and internal organs, but is also meditative and strives for synthesis between body and mind. As a result this makes the style practical for individuals who wish to increase mental and physical health rather than focusing on the combative side of martial arts. Ngo Cho Kun is suitable for all ages, genders, and skill-levels, and works by adapting to the individual practitioner’s natural strengths and physical abilities, thus working for each student rather than students trying to change themselves to better fit the style.
